Free webcam chat: how it works and how to stay safe
A webcam chat lets you talk face to face with people from anywhere, right from your browser. Here’s how to get started and how to keep it a good experience.
How a browser webcam chat works
You open the chat page, choose a nickname and join a room. Text chat works straight away. If you want to go on camera, your browser asks for permission to use the webcam and microphone; nothing starts without your click, and you can turn them off at any moment.
There’s nothing to install: it works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, on a computer or a phone.
Protect your privacy on camera
- Pick a nickname that isn’t your real name and never share your address, workplace, school or phone number.
- Check what’s behind you. Mail, photos, windows and screens can say more than you think.
- Assume anything on camera can be recorded. Never do on camera what you wouldn’t want to see published.
- Be wary of pressure. Someone who insists that you move to another app, undress or send money is a red flag. Leave and report them.
- Use private messages with care. A private chat is private from the room, not from the person you talk to.
Chat-room etiquette
Say hello when you arrive, and give people time to answer. Don’t flood the room with messages or emoticons. Ask before inviting someone to a private chat or asking them to turn on their camera. If a conversation goes wrong, use the ignore button rather than escalating.
Report problems
Moderators can remove messages and ban users. If you see illegal content or someone harasses you, note the nickname, the room and the time, and report it. Our terms of use explain what isn’t allowed.
