Does Red5 Chat still need Flash?

No. Browsers stopped running Flash at the end of 2020. The original code is kept on SourceForge for reference, and the chat you can use today runs in HTML5 and WebRTC through Dialogoo and HTML5-Chat.

Do my visitors have to install anything?

No. The chat runs in any current browser on desktop and mobile. Visitors only allow camera and microphone access when they want to go on webcam.

How do I add a webcam chat to my website?

Create a chat on Dialogoo or HTML5-Chat, customize it from the admin panel, then paste the embed code into your page. You don’t need your own Red5 or Java server.

A Dialogoo full-page chat looks like this:

<iframe src="https://dialogoo.com/chat?embed=1&mode=fullscreen&site=YOUR_SITE_KEY"
  style="width:100%;height:100dvh;border:0"
  allow="camera; microphone; autoplay; fullscreen"
  allowfullscreen title="Chat"></iframe>

How many people can chat at the same time?

It depends on the plan you choose. Streaming is handled by Dialogoo or HTML5-Chat servers, so the limit no longer depends on your own bandwidth.

Can I moderate the chat?

Yes. Admins and moderators can kick and ban users, filter bad words and manage rooms, as in the original Red5 Chat.

Is it free?

The demo room is free to use. HTML5-Chat has a free version, and Dialogoo and HTML5-Chat both offer paid plans with more capacity and options. Custom work by Proxymis is quoted individually.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The chat runs in the browser on Android and iPhone, with webcam and microphone, and adapts to small screens.

Is the video private and secure?

Camera and microphone only turn on after you allow them, and you can stop them at any time. Audio and video are encrypted by WebRTC. Remember that public rooms are visible to everyone in them.

Can I still download the Red5 Chat source code?

Yes, the Flash/Flex source is archived on SourceForge. It needs a Red5 server and the Flash Player, so it won’t run in today’s browsers – treat it as a reference, not something to deploy.
